The Print

This design represents New Zealand. In Maori it translates to Aotearoa “The Land of the Long White Cloud”.

New Zealand is made up of three Islands.
The North Island known as “Te Ika Maui ( the fish of Maui)”,
The South Island is known as “Te Waka a Maui” ( the waka of Maui),
and Stewart Island know as “Te Punga a Maui” ( Maui’s anchor)

Legend says that the Demi God “Maui” was responsible for fishing up the North Island of Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Maui is the gifted, daring, supernatural demigod of Polynesian mythology, tradition and folklore. Despised by his four brothers, Maui would be left behind when they went fishing. So, he secretly made a fishhook from a magical ancestral jawbone. Then one night Maui crept into his brothers’ canoe and hid under the floorboards.

It wasn’t until the brothers were far out of sight and land, and they had filled the bottom of their canoe with fish that Maui revealed himself. He took out his magic fishhook and threw it over the side of the canoe reciting magic incantations. The hook went deeper and deeper into the sea until Maui felt the hook had touched something. He tugged gently and far below the hook caught fast and together with his brothers brought the fish to the surface.

Maui cautioned his brothers to wait until he had appeased Tangaroa the God of the Sea before they cut into the fish. They grew tired of waiting and began to carve out pieces for themselves. These are now the many valleys, mountains, lakes and rocky coastlines of the North island. The fish hook, according to legend, became the cape which now forms the southernmost tips of the Hawkes bay. The anchor is the small island at the base of the map.

There are many other symbols incorporated into this design.
Hei Matau (fish Hook) – based at the tip of the North Island symbolising provision and prosperity. It is also said to provide safe journey over water.

Koru (the unfolding fern frond) flows in and out of the map of New Zealand.
Symbolising new growth, new life, peace, the pathways of life, infinity, the joining together of people, new beginnings, tranquility and representing the past, present and future.
It depicts endearment in the form of the relationship of a parent and a child or husband and wife.
The korus in this design also represent lakes and rivers flowing to the sea…everything is connected.
