Elusiv Winter 10 - Enduring
Elusiv2_1.jpg

To celebrate five years of creating standout stylish menswear, Elusiv menswear presents a selection of Enduring pieces for winter 2010. The collection is a remix of everything the label’s designer Nicola Reilly does best - taking inspiration from New Zealand and influences from Europe to form a sophisticated and fashion forward style.

"This collection is all about sophistication and understated style," says Elusiv designer Nicola Reilly. "I want guys to have fun with the way they dress. They shouldn’t feel restricted or pressured to dress a certain way. It’s all about breaking free of the mould."
To create the range Reilly went through the label’s archives and hand-picked the pieces that represented some of the label’s most successful and immensely wearable items.
Tailored jackets and coats, fitted jeans and pants, stylish tees and a select range of accessories with masculine detailing; Reilly has created clothing that have lasting appeal and look great with minimal maintenance.

Colours are reminiscent of the rugged New Zealand coastline. "They are stormy colours," says Reilly. "Colours of a West Coast beach after a high tide." The collection features decisive, strong and assured garments made with a strong consideration to fit, fabric, stitching and feel - destined to become the most Enduring items of every man’s wardrobe.

Elusiv's New Flag Design

Elusiv_Clothing_Flag_Design_1.jpg

You've probably heard the debate raging about whether New Zealand needs a new flag to give ourselves our own identity away from England and the Commonwealth. Some say keep the status quo, while others say our flag is too similar to Aussie's.

We reckon a new flag would be real cool, and we've knocked up a design that incorporates a Piko Piko design that is on one of our Ts, and also uses the Elusiv Map logo.

Looking For The Next Elusiv Model

winter2_1.jpg

Think you could be the next Elusiv model, or know someone who would?

We have our next photoshoot in March and we always need a new face. Don't worry, it's pretty low key, you don't need to be a professional and it doesn't matter if you've never done it before, we will sort you out and look after you for the day. It will be somewhere around the Mount Maunganui area. Have a look through the photos on the Elusiv site so you get an idea of what we do.

Who knows, this could be the opportunity to kickstart a fashion modelling career. And judging by the amount of casual joking proposals we get for modelling from friends and associates, action speaks louder than words!!

Tie a Scarf Vid passes 50,000 views on Youtube! Stoked.

Can't believe it. We did a video of 5 stylish ways to tie a scarf in March 2009 while I was in Italy, used Italian rugby player Luke McLean as the model (yes I know his name does not sound Italian, he is half Italian, half Australian) and a Bonjah track. And now at print it is at 50,664 views. Some other how to vids we have done have been lucky to get to 664 views, if that.

I guess you can never predict what is going to be popular and what isn't, just have to give it a nudge, and if it works, fantastic, and if not, just shrug your shoulders and try another one. Comments on the vid are certainly interesting. See the vid again below.

Smith has designs on Bay career

by Jamie Troughton | 16th July 2009

Picture: Mark McKeown: Bay of Plenty rugby player Ben Smith has set up a trendy men's clothing business with partner Nicola Reilly.

Ben Smith has been a poster boy for building a life outside rugby. His designer streetwear label Elusiv, set up with partner Nicola Reilly, came to life in a Dunedin garage four years ago but has now grown into an international business. Once known as the rugby player who sold trendy men's clothing on the side, Smith is starting to be recognised more for his off-field pursuits than his rugby nous, which took him from Tauranga Boys' College into the New Zealand Colts and the Highlanders. The NZRU have even used the 26-year-old to talk to rising young rugby stars about keeping a life balance and maintaining interests outside of the game. But now the former Otago and Southland midfielder/wing is back in the Bay, aiming to reclaim some of his rugby credentials with a big season for the Steamers.
"The thing that's cool and exciting about being back is that I've played with a lot of these guys through the age groups, right from Bay of Plenty under-16s up, and at school at Tauranga Boys'," Smith said. "Tanerau Latimer was just coming into the first XV as a fourth former in my last year at school and you could tell he was going to be awesome and I'd play against guys like Colin Bourke and Mike Delany at other schools."I do want a really good season with the Bay and you can tell it's going to be an exciting team to be part of. Down at training you can see the fantastic ball skills in the forwards and it goes right through the team.
"Elusiv. It's a cleverly branded name, summing up what Smith and Reilly see as a fundamental character trait of the Kiwi bloke. It could just as easily describe Smith - a clever midfielder with sharp skills on the field, an international man of mystery off it. He didn't just come from left-field to make this year's Steamers squad - he very nearly stepped straight off a plane from Italy into the trial match last month. "He gave me a ring the day before our final trial and I asked him if he wanted a game," Steamers assistant coach Steve Miln said. "We didn't hesitate - he's experienced and he'll add a lot on and off the field."
Smith will make his debut for his home province in a pre-season match with Counties-Manukau in Whakatane tomorrow on the right wing and if his form is half as good as his timing, he'll do fine. "My plans were in the air - I wasn't sure what was going to be happening next season in Italy because the rugby there is just crumbling. "There are big issues with sponsorship and the recession and teams are going back away from being fully professional. Playing for the Steamers is perfect and the level of rugby's going to be a lot better than what it was in Italy."
Smith's time in Dunedin - he arrived there straight from school and made his Otago debut in 2004 - coincided with the arrival of another Ben Smith, who made this year's Highlanders squad. Always one with an eye for marketing, the Steamers version tried to change his name to "Billy Elusiv" for a season while they were playing together. Commentators lapped it up but Smith was ultimately prevented from making it permanent. "I looked at changing my name properly by deed poll - dad thought it was hilarious but mum was not impressed at all. I had to weigh up whether it was worth getting on the wrong side of my mum!"

Far from Elusive

When Nicola Reilly and her partner, former Highlanders winger Ben Smith, started Elusiv in 2005, their portfolio consisted of a range of t-shirts. Now they sell a full range of clothing, have a store in Brescia, Italy selling there clothing, recently sponsored the first annual Mr Pasifique, opened their first retail store in Tauranga and have launched an new e-store.
Ben_mitchell.jpgJosh_contestant_one_1_2_1.JPGzepherdrillblazer_1_1_2_1.jpgbenandnicola.jpg
And if that wasn't enough, Shortland street's Ben Mitchell modelled for the label at the recent iD Dunedin Fashion Week, when Elusiv joined eight other high profile labels on the runway to celebrate the events tenth anniversary. "I love how the whole community gets behind the event," says Reilly, who designs the label. "There is just something about Dunedin, its fashion, its people, its atmosphere, that is inspiring and unique," she says.
Reilly, who just returned from three months with Smith in Milan, has recently hit the ground running. "Its so cool to see that your clothing is selling over there, because Italians spend a lot of their income on clothing before anything else and it is awesome they are spending it on Elusiv," she says.

The moment she cleared customs she attended the Elusiv Mr New Zealand Pacifique contest, where young males of mainly Pacific and Maori origin from around the country competed for the top prize of $2000 and Elusiv Clothing. We wanted to be a part of this event as all the contestants were being taught such valuable skills that will see them blossom into respectable men - respect, honesty, hard work, loyalty," says Reilly. "As a label we like to be involved in events that we see impact peoples lives," she says. Mr NZ Pacifique seemed like a perfect fit, as it embodies everything the Elusiv brand is about. There is a lot of talent out there, but many of our young men are too shy to give modelling a go."
So what could be possibly next for this highflying label? A UK website, a new womens and childrens line, focus on online sales at www.elusiv.co.nz and possibly world domination. "I love that everyday I am learning something new about business and where we can take ourselves," says Reilly. "I can't wait to see what the future holds."

Success not proving elusive for Nicola

Bay of Plenty Times
Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Even though her fashion brand Elusiv is taking off, Nicola Reilly has her feet firmly on the ground. Elusiv men's designer streetwear is sold through 27 retail outlets in New Zealand, one in Italy and over the internet in Britain, Ireland and Australia more than three years after Nicola and her partner, Tauranga-born professional rugby player Ben Smith, started their boutique wholesale fashion company.

They have plans to establish an online shopping website in Britain and to launch a women's and childrens' equivalent streetwear brand called Visule (Elusiv spelt backwards) and Little Man Elusiv. In the last year, their sales grew 50 per cent and they are looking for a similar increase over the next 12 months. But in these troubled economic times, Nicola the designer and production manager is making sure the business is operating within its own means, even if it's based on both sides of the world.

``Our big thing was to make sure we were prepared for the downturn,'' she said. ``We are keeping the business nice and small; safe and secure. We've had a few stores close on us and we want to minimise every risk we see around us. It's paying off and we are starting to gain momentum.'' Operating out of a unit in Puriri St, Mount Maunganui, Nicola keeps the costs down by not only completing the designing and pattern making, but also packing the garments for the courier, and tending to the small retail shop downstairs. She also looks after sales in the North Island while an agent covers the South Island.

boppicture_1.jpg
STYLISH: Elusiv co-founder Nicola Reilly, now based in Tauranga, knows how to dress the smart, intuitive man.
In between matches for Calvisano (Province of Brescia) in northern Italy, Ben who attended Tauranga Boys' College and represented New Zealand Colts, Otago, Southland and the Highlanders handles marketing including updating the Man Guide on their website (www.elusiv.co.nz). This section gives advice on important matters such as how to iron a shirt and fold a T-shirt, how to make a good impression, and how to tie a tie and a scarf. ``We can run (most of) the business from the laptop,'' said Nicola, ``particularly since the online selling is a strong component.''

Nicola, 27, and Ben, 25, started their business in a garage in Dunedin when they were studying at Otago University. Nicola, brought up in Takaka near Nelson, graduated with a physical education degree majoring in sports science but she soon followed her first love of designing. ``I always made my own clothes, and I would sew horse coats and fix their saddles back at home,'' she said. ``The university rugby team needed dress jackets and we made 35 of them, then hoodies and T-shirts. We dressed the Highlanders with shirts and pants, and it went from there.'' During Elusiv's first year in 2006, Nicola and Ben attended the Dunedin Fashion Incubator programme and the university Kickstart mentoring course. ``They guided us through with business plans, a company structure and a budget it set us on our way,'' said Nicola, who also runs early morning and evening Les Mills fitness classes at Baywave Aquatic and Leisure Centre, and at Bay Bodyfit.

Nicola, who moved to Tauranga during the middle of last year when Ben headed to Italy on his rugby contract, designs an array of stylish streetwear from T-shirts to jackets and coats with a distinct European/ Italian flair. The Elusiv clothing is matched with accessories such as belts, cufflinks, caps and men's rings. Elusiv's T-shirts, featuring Maori designs produced by Dunedin- based artist Dave Burke, have become popular. ``Every piece of clothing has a meaning through its detail and quality,'' said Nicola. ``It's a stylish yet discreet mark of today's intuitive man. There's plenty of them around. ``We are dressing a personality someone who is intelligent, smart and intriguing but doesn't shout it from the rooftop. He cares how he looks but he doesn't brag about it.
``Our aim is to create a strong brand, producing an outfit for any occasion from a barbeque to a wedding. I wouldn't say the brand is edgy but it's keeping up with the trends, and the clothing will become part of a wardrobe that will last for a long time. We are proud of where we are heading and where we have come from,'' she said. Sixty per cent of Elusiv's garments are made in China. The merino wool, modal (Beechwood) fibre and some cotton clothing is produced in Auckland, by Synergy Clothing. Nicola is happy to locate the New Zealand production in Tauranga if she can find the right manufacturer. Elusiv will courier orders overnight in New Zealand and it takes three to four days to deliver in Australia and five to 10 days in Britain.

The unobtrusive company is now making moves in Britain and Europe. Elusiv will soon be storing product in a warehouse in London, to speed up delivery, and selling on a dedicated website due to go live in June. Showing real Kiwi initiative, Nicola also took a suitcase full of her clothing to Italy in December, walked in to the VE20 streetwear store near Milan and made a presentation.
``That Italians are fussy and I wanted to see if they would buy our clothing. They sold the stock in three months and they want more,'' said Nicola. ``We could get hundreds of orders, I don't know, but we want to treat Italy like New Zealand. We want to play everything safe and secure and not grow beyond our means. The big thing is the brand is getting out there and more people are getting to know it. I think it's fantastic.

``It still surprises me when people say they have heard of Elusiv. We are still very young,'' she said.

Rugby Duo Sell fashion to Italians

Sunday Star Times

A FASHION label that grew from Dunedin 'rugby-heads' need for a post-match makeover is taking on the fashion conscious Italians at their own game.

When Nicola Reilly and her partner, former Highlanders winger Ben Smith, started Elusiv in 2005, their portfolio consisted of a range of T-shirts. Now they have a store in Brescia, near Milan, and are also selling jackets, and hoodies. And at the recent iD Fashion Week in Dunedin their clothes were modelled by Shortland Street Actor Ben Mitchell.

Rugby has long been at the heart of Elusiv: Diversification from T-shirts began after Smith's Highlanders teammates needed suit jackets, so the couple put their hands up. "Out of my garage, I made 30 jackets," Reilly recalls.

And ther foray into the Italian market was inspired by smiths move to Italian Rugby club Calvisano. The couple went looking for distributors and found the Brescia Shop. It has sold Elusiv clothing since December. All of the initial stock - just as much as Reilly could fit into her suitcase and a few boxes - has sold out. Smith is now staying behind to play for Calvisano while his partner builds the fashion empire here.

Reilly says; "Its so cool to see that your clothing is selling over there, because they are so fussy." She says Italians spend a lot of their income on clothing before anything else. "Its awesome they are spending on Elusiv." She says Italians seem to like the Maori designs that feature prominantly on the clothing. Elusiv is also about to lauch a UK website.

ELUSIV MISTER NEW ZEALAND PASIFIQUE

Josh_contestant_one_1_2_1.JPGcontestant_1.JPGLeroyhaka_1.JPG

March, 2009

Recently Elusiv was delighted to sponsor the first annual Mr New Zealand Pacifique. Contestants from around the country competed for the top prize of $2000 and Elusiv clothing.

"Elusiv wanted to be a part of this event as all the contestants were being taught such valuable skills that will see them blossom into respectable men - respect, honestly, hard work, loyalty,” says Elusiv designer Nicola Reilly. “As a label we like to be involved in events that we see impact people lives,” she says. “Mr NZ Pasifique seemed like a perfect fit, as it embodies everything the Elusiv brand is about.”

The winner, Michael Rankin, a 19 year-old Unitec student, told SPASIFIKmag.com afterwards “It was shocking really. I was surprised because I thought a number of boys could have won it. I was happy my mum was there to see it.”

Michael was given a card by a talent scout after his win and will definitely consider modeling if opportunities come along.  The New Zealand born Samoan spent most of his life in Apia, living in the village of Vaoala and attending Robert Louis Stevenson School. He returned to Auckland in 2006 and attended Mt Albert Grammar. Rugby and kickboxing are his other passions.

Organizer Peter Tamasese says the purpose of setting up Mr NZ Pacifique was to create a pathway for young males of mainly Pacific and Maori origin to pursue a career in modeling. “We’re not just talking about runway models,” he explains. “There are many other opportunities for models such as film and television, catalogue and product modeling. This is another career option for our young men, especially for school leavers.”

Tamasese, who heads the Pacific Institute of Performing Arts at Best Training, believes there is a growing demand for Pacific Island faces but providing the opportunities for exposure was important. “A lot talent exists out there and many of them are getting scouted already, but there is the old problem of shyness to give modeling a go, and they also lack the exposure.”

Tamasese and his fellow co-founding members want the event to become a yearly event and eventually grow it to a more Pan-Pacific level where island nations are involved.

Fashion Profile: Elusiv

Getfrank Magazine, November 2008 null

Straightforward designs that are as attractive
as they are easy to pull on are hallmarks of any
kiwi male's wardrobe. Elusiv formed in 2005 by professional rugby player Ben Smith and designer Nicola Reilly, have opened their first retail store in Tauranga and an office in Milan, picked up a new stockists in Brescia, Italy and launched a new website - all indicators that their designs and high quality clothing truly caters to today's modern man.

As expected for a label with so many celebrity fans, the recent celebration of the opening of the store held at The Buddha Lounge in Tauranga drew a bevy of famous faces from shortland street stars (including the face of the labels winter campaign, Ben Mitchell), MC Josh Kronfeld and with clothes modelled by six memebers of the Bay of Plenty steamers.

Later in the night Tiki Taane played until 3am to an enthusiastic crowd enjoying specially designed cocktails, all making the party the place in town everyone wanted to be.

The summer collection from the label is called "Travelling without Moving", and features versatile coats and detachable hoods, able to be worn as shirts or jackets; sturdy, directional denim with modern detailing, lightweight tees with intriguing designs and a colour palette of deep electric or pale sky blue, deep burnt red, subtle orange and ash grey.

Reilly talks about summer and the new store.....

What was your philosophy behind this summers collection?

"Travelling Without Moving is all about clothing that is relaxed, adaptable, comfortable and modern. Each peice is defined by its fit, function, construction, durability, fabric and finish - garments charateristic of the man who wears them."

What is different about the tees you are offering this season?

"Elusiv tees are more than just tees, each one has detail and is defined by a story of its influences....like the intricate carving-like pattern that features of the back of the Fusion T, created by Artist Dave Burke. The print is about the fusion of cultures in New Zealand. Or there is the Tiki Tee, which echoes the Traditional chest Ta moko, complete with tiki pendant hanging in the middle. Summer 08/09 has plenty for the man whose mum wouldn't let him have a tatoo!"

Tell us about your new store?

"Our main stockist in the Bay of Plenty closed and people were always asking me to open a store close to our warehouse in Tauranga, so we decided to open up shop! The store features two sections - a smaller shop stocked high with in-season gear and a large upper floor dedicated to outlet sales".

What is the most common mistake you see New Zealand men make?

"So many men don't take the time to care about how they look. I mean c'mon guys!"

Who has been the greatest influence on your career?

"My partner because I get to put all my designs on him first!"

The Elusiv designer joins Zambesi, Carlson, Sera Lilly, Kingan Jones, Caroline Church and Hailwood who all took part in the Designer Jandals initiative - with $5 from each pair sold going to New Zealand's underprivileged children.

Reilly says she is excited to be involved and says purchasing the jandals is an inexpensive way for kiwis to help support the charity. "its been wonderful to see how quickly KidsCan has grown. I Iike that it's a New Zealand charity that helps kids here in our own country and we get to see the benefits of this on our doorstep.

Jandals are available from Monday 24th November across the country and Number 1 Shoes.

Interview - Nicola Reilly, Elusiv

Wednesday, 19th November 2008

Summer is coming and its time to revamp your jandal collection!
We asked Nicola Reilly from Kiwi Label Elusiv about transforming the quintessential kiwi icon into fashionable footwear.

How did you get involved in the project? I got asked by KidsCan and I thought it was a great opportunity to be able to support (them)"

Why do you think it's important to support Kidscan?I have been watching KidsCan since they started and I have seen huge growth, and you can really see the effects that they are having in our own backyard"

Have you designed Jandals or footwear before? What was different about creating the KidsCan jandals compared to your previous design experience?"No, i have never designed jandals or footwear before. I have got lots of designs in my head for footwear but I have stuck to just clothing at this stage.....Maybe this is is the start of something."

Whats the inspiration behind the design?"This design represents New Zealand. In Maori it translates to Aotearoa 'The Land of the Long White Cloud'. There are also many other symbols incorporated into this desing. Hei Matau (fish hook) - based at the tip of the North island. Koru ( the unfolding fern frond) - flowing in and out of the map of New Zealand. It depicts endearment in the form of the relationship of a parent and a child or husband and wife." "The korus in this design also represent lakes and rivers flowing to the sea...everything is connected."

Why are jandals so cool? Jandals are great, because they are easy, everyone can wear them and they aren't expensive."

Can jandals be trendy of fashionable? I guess jandals are seen as a casual part of our wardrobe. They can definitely be trendy, just depends what you wear them with.......Elusiv jandals and an Elusiv tee is pretty trendy and fashionable." ( Eds note: Of course!)

Elusiv Comes To Town

Wednesday, 19th November 2008

Unophoto.jpg

Relocating from the creative fashion hot spot of Dunedin, Elusiv has made the move north in order to steamline their dispatch and co-ordination procedures. Taking over an established Mount Maunganui warehouse made the move a smooth one and the proximity to Auckland means easy access for buyers and production teams and a great lifestyle in the Bay for the owners of this high end fashion label which is taken men and fashion by storm!

Owners Ben Smith and Nicola Reilly are used to coastal living. Nicola hails from Nelson and Ben is one of our own anyhow! He left the Bay to go South and played rugby for the Highlanders - which is how the label all began....Nicola grew up sewing for herself and had no formal training and was in fact a PhysEd student in Otago. Partner Ben, was playing club rugby and the team needed dress jackets. "I thought i'd give it a go for them," Nicola Laughs. " I worked from my garage, produced the jackets and they were so well received.

Ben was soon playing rugby for the highlanders and the team needed 'Number Ones' - a formal outfit for appearing at the after match functions and so forth, Again, Nicola came up with the goods. The Dunedin Fashion Incubator - an organization which helps mentor fashion in that city - heard about Nicola's ventures and that she and Ben had decided to set up a business partnership.

One News found that Elusiv were dressing the Highlanders, that gave the label profile and the orders have been rolling in since.

With four season behind them, Elusiv are hoping to show again at Air New Zealand fashion week which could certainly boost there 30 stockists they already have around the country. Ben is relocating to Milan, the fashion capital of Italy, to play rugby and Nicola will join him for a stint at the end of the year where she will no doubt be further inspired! The label is being stocked in Australia and the couple are keen to establish stockists in Italy and Europe too.

In the meantime, there is a lot to be done here! Elusiv has sponsored the likes of Josh Kronfeld, Ben Mitchell ( Tk on Shortland Street) and Tiki Taane wears Elusiv in his C4 music video. Hollywood hunks Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber were spotted in Elusiv while in Dunedin filming their latest X-Men Movie. And if you are male with an interest in looking the part, you too should be seen in this label! Merino Knits, antique denim jeans are mixed with vests and jackets, smart casual office shirts, blazers and dress pants are included in the range, the target being to dress a man from the office to the weekend.

Elusiv is clothing that compliments the man and doesn't define him," Nicola explains "Each garment incorporates some hidden detail for its wearer to discover," Discover it for yourself soon!

Tiki wears Elusiv on new music video

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

This is Tiki’s latest music video that you may have seen on C4 recently, the song is unreal, absolutely loving it. And also, he is kitted out in Elusiv!! Loving that too :)Tiki uploaded this video to youtube himself, and someone asked him why he was freely spreading his music around. He had this to say about it “Thanx 4 tha positive compliment, but i dont see it as “lowering” myself…? not sure where youre coming from there. Its more out of respect that i add those TAGS and in hopes that my music will get played and heard.I love this song man, it means tha world to me…. and im just trying to share it with as many like minded peeps as possible.”

Elusiv showing at Dunedin Fashion Week

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Elusiv will show 5 outfits from Winter 08 range in the Dunedin fashion Show on Saturday 1st March at the Railway Station. Each year this event seems to get better and better, so we are really looking forward to it. Tickets sold out pretty fast, so should be a great night.

A spectacular line-up of designers will feature in the ninth annual Southern Trust id Dunedin Fashion Show 2008 to be held at the Dunedin Railway Station on Saturday 1 March 2008.Twenty five labels from established, emerging and new generation designers will take part in the show, which is the culmination of the Southern Trust id Dunedin Fashion Week.

Dunedin is a unique city renowned for its creative talent and global success stories. For the last eight years, Dunedin has been the setting for a fashion extravaganza of existing and new talent. This year is no exception. Despite, and perhaps because of its remote location, Dunedin fashion has been described as edgy, directional and dynamic.
